TOPICS COVERED
- In this narrative, Prof Iris Nagtegaal will take you through twenty years of research on this topic, highlighting the significance of tumour deposits in tumour progression and the struggle with the adequate staging of colorectal cancer. It encompasses various aspects of cancer research, starting with large scale epidemiologic studies and systematic reviews, moving on to morphological studies, incorporating spatial transcriptomics, proteomics and machine learning, all aimed at ultimately improving cancer care.
- Key questions addressed include the identification and scoring of tumor deposits, their distinction from lymph node metastases on multiple levels and the understand of their functional role in cancer progression. Knowledge of the underlying biology of tumor deposits, as well as their implications for therapeutic decision making are essential in order to provide the evidence base for future staging.
