The London Undergraduate Pathology Conference is a one-day event aimed at introducing medical students to the diverse subspecialties within pathology, featuring expert talks, student poster presentations, and interactive workshops led by pathologists, taking place on Sunday 27th October at the Imperial College London South Kensington campus.

The inaugural London Undergraduate Pathology Conference is a one-day event that aims to introduce medical students and foundation doctors to the diverse world of pathology and its many subspecialties. Organised by the UCL, Imperial, and King’s College London Pathology Societies, the conference will take place on Sunday the 27th of October 2024, at the Imperial College London South Kensington Campus. Registration opens at 08:30, with tea, coffee and light breakfast provided.

The morning (09:00-12:45) will feature a series of engaging 30-minute talks, delivered by leading pathologists, each representing a different subspecialty. These experts will cover topics such as neuropathology, forensics, haematopathology, histopathology, immunology, and chemical pathology, offering students an introduction to each field. Each talk will give an overview of the specialist’s clinical and academic journey, their day-to-day work, and any research they are involved in. This session will allow students to explore the breadth of pathology beyond the basics and understand how each subspecialty plays a vital role in patient care. There will be a coffee break midway through the morning session to allow for networking and a chance to recharge.

From 12:45-14:00, lunch will be served, and attendees will have the opportunity to view student poster presentations. Medical students and foundation doctors from across the UK who have conducted pathology-related research will have the opportunity to submit abstracts in advance, with the best submissions invited for presentation. The poster session offers a chance for students to discuss their research with peers and attending pathologists, providing a platform for sharing ideas and receiving feedback, with prizes on offer.

The afternoon session, running from 14:00-17:00, will be dedicated to interactive, small-group workshops. A total of six workshops will be led by expert pathologists, covering topics such as neuropathology, haematopathology, mock forensic cases, digital pathology, and infectious diseases. Each workshop will last 45 minutes, and students will rotate through four workshops, having ranked their preferences in advance. This will allow attendees to experience a variety of specialties and engage in hands-on learning, case discussions, and interactive problem-solving under the guidance of experienced pathologists. The workshops are designed to give students practical insights into real-world pathology and an opportunity to explore potential career paths in the field.
The day will conclude with closing remarks and an awards ceremony at 17:00, where prizes will be presented for the best poster presentations. Attendees will also receive certificates of participation, for attending the conference.

Overall, the London Undergraduate Pathology Conference aims to offer medical students and foundation doctors a unique opportunity to explore the breadth of pathology, engage with experts in the field, and develop a deeper understanding of potential career pathways in this vital medical specialty. There will be ample opportunity for informal networking with likeminded peers, and stimulating discussion.
Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to present their research in the field as a poster, to a national audience of both peers and experts. Prizes will be awarded for the best posters at the end of the conference. Moreover, all attendees will receive certificates of attendance.
