Overview

Scotland has the highest rate of drug related deaths in all of Europe and 2.7 times higher than the UK average. This webinar will draw on that experience and share insights on post mortem examination and toxicology interpretation in drug related deaths, including the challenges of poly-drug use and an ageing drug user population with the interplay of chronic disease.

Autopsy webinar series - Drug related deaths

  • Dr Julie McAdam

    I have been a Consultant Forensic Pathologist for 21 years and am Head of Forensic Pathology Services, University of Glasgow.

    During that time I have carried out approximately 11,000 post mortem examinations and, given the high number of drug-related deaths in Scotland, a large proportion of these deaths have been of drug abusers.

    Early in my career I developed an interest in drug-related deaths and I have been part of a number of associated professional groups in the past, including the National Forum on Drug Related Deaths, an independent expert group examining trends and disseminating information with a view to reducing drug-related deaths in Scotland.

    I am currently a Board Member of the Scottish Drugs Forum, a charity which aims to improve Scotland’s approach to drug-related issues.

    Dr Esther Youd is the Chair of the RCPath Death Investigation Committee and autopsy pathologist at the University of Glasgow.
