The College demonstrated solidarity with THET’s campaign to support health care workers in Myanmar by lighting up the College building in red on 1 February. Myanmar’s health workers are continuing to provide care in the most challenging of circumstances.

On 1 February, the College building was lit up in red as we joined other royal colleges and institutions across the UK in a display of unity to honour the lives lost one year on since the coup in Myanmar.

The country is now considered one of the most treacherous places in the world to be a health worker. Despite this, many healthcare professionals continue providing vital medical services.

It is not just everyday medical provisions, electricity, and Wi-Fi connectivity, which many systems need to operate, that are in short and sporadic supply, medical books and learning materials, even before last year’s turn of events, are also scarce.

In September 2021, the College applied to the BMA Information fund for up to £2,000 worth of medical books and learning materials, such as: Basic Pathology, the Oxford Handbook of Epidemiology for Clinicians and haemoglobin colour scale starter kits.

We were delighted to receive news from the BMA that our funding application had been successful. The resources will be donated to medical doctors of all specialities and allied health care professionals in Myanmar to assist with their continued professional development.

What is the BMA Information Fund?

  • The fund has been operating since 2000 and has provided over 342 donations of books and other information materials to health organisations in 72 countries worldwide. The fund focuses on low-income countries facing significant health challenges.
  • The fund is run in association with Health Books International (operated by Practical Action Publishing, the publishing arm of the charity Practical Action). HBI sources, produces and distributes practical and accessible health information and educational materials designed for use in low-resource settings.
