International Regional Advisor for Sub-Saharan Africa

WHY SHOULD I APPLY?

The Royal College of Pathologists has a global multidisciplinary membership, with 25% of its members currently based outside the UK. In addition, many of the College’s UK members are involved in a range of international projects and collaborations. The College has a commitment to strengthening its engagement with its international members, as well as developing the College’s international profile, activities, and collaborations in accordance with the 2023 – 2026 Pathology is Global International Strategy.

WHO CAN APPLY?

We welcome applications from Fellows who would like to apply for an International Regional Advisor post for Sub-Saharan Africa.

In order to be eligible for this role you must meet the criteria in the terms of reference for the International Regional Advisor role and be a Fellow of the College with at least 5 years’ experience as a practising pathologist. You do not have to reside in the region that you wish to represent, but the quality and strength of your professional relationships and links with pathologists, laboratory professionals and institutions within your chosen region will be considered.

WHAT DOES THE ROLE ENTAIL?

The role of the International Regional Advisor is a voluntary position, for an initial term of three-years. The International Regional Advisor acts as a key point of contact for members and Country Advisors, in the relevant region and in the UK. You will support the work of the Clinical Director of International Activities for the region by implementing priorities at a regional level, coordinating with Country Advisors within the respective region, identifying opportunities for engagement, project collaborations and member development. 

WHAT IS THE COMMITMENT?

Meetings for regular attendance:

  • International Committee meetings (May and November)
  • Bi-annual meetings with Country Advisors (March/April and September/October), Country Advisor updates are required for the International Regional Advisor to provide regional updates at the International Committee meetings.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contributing to the delivery of the College’s international strategy.
  • Developing and maintaining effective communications with the College’s members within their respective region, including ascertaining the views and feedback of members on relevant issues and adequately representing these views on the International Committee.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communication with the Country Advisors within their respective region and meeting with them in advance of each International Committee meeting.
  • Supporting the formulation and delivery of Country Advisor engagement plans for their respective countries, and developing an overall regional plan detailing for example, regional priorities and objectives; key institutions to be engaged; opportunities for developing country representatives; building the profile and presence of the College within the region etc.
  • Advising the International Committee about their region, including identifying emerging issues and advising the International Committee on the implications of any policies, identifying any opportunities or projects which may exist to extend the College’s influence, securing funding from external sources and building its international profile etc.
  • Supporting the activities of the International Committee and work of the College e.g. identifying speakers for international events such as International Pathology Day and webinars or webinar series, supporting funded projects being undertaken via the College etc.
  • Submitting and delivering progress reports to the May and November International Committee meetings.
  • Representing the College in their respective regions in their professional relationships and through attendance at appropriate national and regional meetings.
  • Promoting the College, its member services, qualifications, examinations, standards, education and training amongst the wider College membership and potential members through the use of the College website, College social media, quarterly Bulletin and College events or meetings.
  • Keeping informed of the rules and regulations underpinning the College’s work in training, examinations and continuing professional development.
  • Acting as a source of advice, guidance and expertise to the College on the nature and structure of pathology training, assessments, examinations and professional development in the relevant region.
